Welcome to my studio. Come inside and take a moment with me in this place of creation. All this happens in Aptos, California beneath redwoods, fir and oak and a stone's toss from the Aptos creek which flows next to our home and garden. This art that comes through me is like the fruits, vegetables and herbs growing around the studio, truly a product of the Earth, its joys and delights.

Here is where it all starts. Joining us today is Mary. She has been to a recent show and was impressed by the wonderful earthy colors or tones of the art. She wants to contract me produce her torso as an anniversary gift for her significant other. Happily her anniversary is not for another month, the time I will need to bring her piece to completion.

You are welcome to join us in this creation. First we agree upon the form that Mary wishes to be produced from her body such as face and front torso, the back with her head turned perhaps, or an exotic angle of hip, breast and torso. She chooses to have a rear view of her torso. Mary says “my significant other loves my back!”

We agree to go for a sculpture that encompasses from her buttocks to her neck. Plaster strips are applied in a form similar to the manner used for setting broken bones using cheesecloth impregnated with plaster of Paris. After about thirty minutes the plaster has hardened to a point where the form can be removed intact. This creates a negative mold where later, when the plaster is fully set, strips of clay are carefully placed to recreate Mary’s torso. Mary’s work is done where mine has just begun.
